OVERVIEW

Xarelto (rivaroxaban) is a prescription brand-name medication. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved it to treat or prevent blood clots in adults in certain situations. Xarelto comes as tablets that you take by mouth. It contains the active drug rivaroxaban. This drug belongs to a group of drugs called anticoagulants, which are also known as blood thinners. Xarelto works by inhibiting (blocking the action of) a blood clotting factor in the body called Factor Xa. It’s currently only available as a brand-name medication.

Xarelto is an approved medication from the FDA. This medication was produced to help reduce the chances of developing blood clots in conditions such as: Afib, DVT and PE. Xarelto also reduces the chance of negative cardiovascular situations.

USES

Rivaroxaban is used to prevent blood clots from forming due to a certain irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation) or after hip or knee replacement surgery. It is also used to prevent blood clots from forming in high-risk patients with limited mobility during their hospital stay and after discharge. In addition, rivaroxaban is used to treat blood clots (such as in deep vein thrombosis-DVT or pulmonary embolus-PE) and to prevent the blood clots from forming again. Rivaroxaban is an anticoagulant that works by blocking certain clotting proteins in your blood.

HOW TO USE XARELTO

Take this medication by mouth, exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The dose is normally taken once a day if you are taking this drug to prevent blood clots following knee or hip replacement surgery, or during a hospital stay and after discharge. If you are taking this medication to prevent strokes and blood clots caused by an irregular heartbeat, you should take it once a day with your evening meal. If you are taking rivaroxaban to treat blood clots, the dose is usually taken twice a day for the first 3 weeks, and then once a day.
