What is Truvada?
Emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate are the active ingredients of Truvada. Antiviral drugs like emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate stop the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) from growing in your body.
If you’re taking other medications that contain emtricitabine, tenofovir, lamivudine, or adefovir, don’t use Truvada.
Before taking this medicine
If you are allergic to emtricitabine or tenofovir disoproxil fumarate, you should not take Truvada. If you’re also taking emtricitabine, tenofovir, lamivudine, or adefovir, don’t take this medicine (such as Atripla, Combivir, Complera, Descovy, Dutrebis, Emtriva, Epivir, Epzicom, Genvoya, Hepsera, Odefsey, Stribild, Triumeq, Trizivir, or Viread).
To make sure Truvada is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had:
hepatitis B (you may need to be tested for hepatitis B before using this drug);
osteoporosis (low bone mineral density) or osteoporosis (low bone mineral density)
Kidney disease is a serious condition.
How should I take Truvada?
Follow your doctor’s instructions for taking Truvada. Read all drug guides or instruction sheets and follow all guidelines on your prescription label.
Truvada side effects
If you develop hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat, seek emergency medical attention right away.
Call your doctor at once if you have:
Fever, night sweats, weariness, muscle or joint discomfort, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, enlarged glands in neck or groin are all signs of a new HIV infection.
bone ache that is abrupt or uncommon;
Little or no urination, swelling in your feet or ankles, fatigue, or shortness of breath are all symptoms of kidney disease.
Nausea, bloating, upper stomach pain, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored feces, and jaundice are all symptoms of liver disorders (yellowing of the skin or eyes).
Common Truvada side effects may include:
headache, dizziness, depression, or exhaustion; difficulty sleeping, unusual dreams; nausea, stomach discomfort; weight loss; or rash
