Purpose of Simvastatin
Simvastatin belongs to a class of drugs known as ‘statins’. It works by reducing the amount of cholesterol produced by the liver. Lowering “bad” cholesterol and triglycerides and increasing “good” cholesterol reduces the risk of heart disease and helps prevent strokes and heart attacks.
Simvastatin Uses
Simvastatin is used with a proper diet to lower “bad” cholesterol and fats (LDL, triglycerides, etc.) in the blood and to increase “good” cholesterol (HDL).
It is also used to lower the risk of stroke, heart attack, and other heart complications in people with diabetes, coronary artery disease, or other risk factors.
How do you use Simvastatin
If you are using the liquid form of this medicine, take this medicine on an empty stomach. Shake the bottle well for at least 20 seconds before each dose. Carefully measure the dose with a special measuring instrument/spoon. Do not use a household spoon as it may not give the correct dose.
Simvastatin Dosage
- For oral dosage forms (suspensions or tablets):
- Adults – 20 to 40 milligrams (mg) once daily in the evening.
- Children 10 years and older – 10-40 mg once daily in the evening. Your doctor may increase your dose if necessary.
- Children under 10 years of age – Usage and dosage should be determined by a physician.
Simvastatin Side Effects

- persistent nausea/vomiting
- yellowing of the eyes/skin
- dark urine,
- stomach/abdominal pain
see your doctor immediately.
Very uncommon for people taking simvastatin may experience mild memory problems or confusion.

Store Simvastatin in an airtight container at room temperature away from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight. Do not freeze.
