OVERVIEW
Procoralan is a heart drug that is used to treat the symptoms of long-term stable angina (chest, jaw, and back discomfort produced by physical exertion) in individuals who have coronary artery disease (disease of the heart caused by the obstruction of the blood vessels that supply blood to the heart muscle). Patients with a normal heart rhythm and a heart rate of at least 70 beats per minute are prescribed the medication. It is used in patients who cannot be treated with beta blockers (another type of drug used to treat angina) or in patients whose illness cannot be controlled with beta blockers alone.
Patients with long-term heart failure (when the heart is unable to pump enough blood to the rest of the body) who have a normal cardiac rhythm and a heart rate of at least 75 beats per minute are also given procoralan. It’s used in conjunction with other treatments, such as beta blockers, or in people who can’t take beta blockers.

HOW DOES PROCORALAN WORK?
Angina is a condition in which the heart does not receive enough oxygenated blood. These symptoms arise during physical exertion in stable angina. Ivabradine, the active ingredient in Procoralan, acts by blocking the ‘If currents’ in the sinus node, the heart’s “pacemaker” that governs contractions and regulates heart rate. When these currents are inhibited, the heart rate slows down, reducing the amount of work the heart has to do and requiring less oxygenated blood. As a result, procoralan decreases or prevents angina symptoms.
WHAT ARE THE RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH PROCORALAN?
Procoralan’s most prevalent adverse effect (which affects more than 1 in 10 persons) is light phenomena, often known as “phosphenes” (a temporary brightness in the field of vision). HOW TO STORE PROCORALAN
- Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
- Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the carton and blister after `EXP’. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
- This medicine does not require any special storage conditions.
- Do not throw away any medicine via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to throw away medicines you no longer use. These measures will help to protect the environment.
