What is Onglyza?
Onglyza (saxagliptin) is a diabetes medication that helps to keep blood sugar levels in check. It works by regulating the amount of insulin produced by your body after you eat.
How to use Onglyza

If you have diabetic ketoacidosis, you should not use Onglyza (call your doctor for treatment with insulin).
If you have kidney disease or are on dialysis, consult your doctor before taking this medicine.

Before taking this medicine
If you’ve ever had a severe allergic response to saxagliptin or are in diabetic ketoacidosis, you shouldn’t use Onglyza (call your doctor for treatment).
Tell your doctor if you’ve ever had any of the following conditions to ensure Onglyza is safe for you:
if you have renal illness (or are on dialysis); cardiac problems; pancreatitis; gallstones; high blood triglycerides (a kind of fat); or alcoholism.
How should I take Onglyza?
Follow your doctor’s instructions when taking Onglyza. Read all drug guides or instruction sheets and follow all guidelines on your prescription label. Your doctor may adjust your dose from time to time.
Onglyza can be taken with or without food. Pay attention to your doctor’s directions. Do not crush, chew, or break the tablet; instead, swallow it whole.
Onglyza side effects
If you develop hives, a purple or red skin rash that spreads and causes blistering and peeling, difficulty breathing, or swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or neck, get emergency medical attention.
