WHAT IS LUMIGAN (BIMATOPROST)  AND HOW IS IT USED?

Lumigan (bimatoprost ophthalmic solution) is a synthetic prostamide analog with ocular hypotensive activity that works by regulating the flow of fluid within the eye to maintain a normal pressure used to treat certain types of glaucoma and other causes of high pressure inside the eye. Lumigan is also used to improve fullness, length, and color of the eyelashes in people with a condition called hypotrichosis, a lack of eyelash growth.

Lumigan (Bimatoprost) 0.01% Ophthalmic Solution is a medicine used to reduce pressure in the eyes in adults with glaucoma and high pressure in the eye. If the pressure in your eye is too high it can damage your sight, potentially leading to blindness. It works by helping fluid flow from inside the eye into the blood.

FORMS

0.03% Ophthalmic Solution – each mL of clear, colourless, sterile solution contains 0.3 mg of bimatoprost. Nonmedicinal ingredients: benzalkonium chloride, citric acid monohydrate, purified water, sodium chloride, and sodium phosphate dibasic heptahydrate. Sodium hydroxide or hydrochloric acid may be added to adjust pH.

0.01% Ophthalmic Solution – each mL of clear, colourless, sterile solution contains 0.1 mg of bimatoprost. Nonmedicinal ingredients: 0.2 mg of benzalkonium chloride as preservative, sodium chloride, sodium phosphate dibasic heptahydrate, citric acid monohydrate, and purified water. Sodium hydroxide and/or hydrochloric acid may be added to adjust pH.

BEFORE YOU TAKE THE MEDICATION

You should not use Lumigan if you are allergic to Bimatoprost. To make sure Lumigan is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had: swelling or infection in your eye; retinal detachment; or eye surgery or injury affecting the lens of your eye. Lumigan may cause a gradual change in the color of your eyes. You may also notice increased growth or thickness of your eyelashes. These changes occur slowly and you may not notice them for months or years. Color changes may be permanent even after your treatment ends, and may occur only in the eye being treated. This could result in a cosmetic difference in eye or eyelash color from one eye to the other. It is not known whether Lumigan will harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.

HOW TO USE

Apply this medication in the affected eye(s), usually once a day in the evening, or as directed by your doctor. Do not use bimatoprost more often because it will not work as well. To apply eye drops, wash your hands first. To avoid contamination, do not touch the dropper tip or let it touch your eye or any other surface.

Bimatoprost contains a preservative that may stain contact lenses. If you are wearing contact lenses, remove them before using your eye drops. Wait at least 15 minutes after each dose before putting your lenses back in. Tilt your head back, look upward, and pull down the lower eyelid to make a pouch. Hold the dropper directly over your eye and place one drop into the pouch. Look downward and gently close your eyes for 1 to 2 minutes. Place one finger at the corner of your eye (near the nose) and apply gentle pressure. This will prevent the medication from draining out. Try not to blink and do not rub your eye. Repeat these steps for your other eye if so directed. Do not rinse the dropper. Replace the dropper cap after each use, and keep the cap tightly closed. If you are using another kind of eye medication (e.g., drops or ointments), wait at least 5 minutes before applying other medications. Use eye drops before eye ointments to allow the eye drops to enter the eye. Use this medication regularly in order to get the most benefit from it. Remember to use it at the same time each day. Keep using bimatoprost even if you feel well. Most people with glaucoma or high pressure in the eye do not have symptoms.

SIDE EFFECTS

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Stop using this medicine and call your doctor at once if you have: eye swelling, redness, severe discomfort, crusting or drainage (may be signs of infection); vision changes; or red, swollen, or itchy eyelids. Common side effects may include: eye redness.

POSSIBLE QUESTIONS

IS IT SAFE TO USE THE MEDICATION WHILE DURING BREASTFEED?

Lumigan 0.01% Ophthalmic Solution is probably safe to use during breastfeeding. Limited human data suggests that the drug does not represent any significant risk to the baby. To reduce the amount of Lumigan 0.01% Ophthalmic Solution that reaches the breastmilk, place pressure over the corner of the eye for 1 minute or more, then remove the excess solution with an absorbent tissue.

WHAT I SHOULD KNOW MORE ABOUT LUMIGAN?

Your eyelashes may become denser and eyelid skin may darken. These changes should disappear after discontinuing Lumigan 0.01% Ophthalmic Solution. Wait for at least 5-10 minutes before delivering the next medication in the same eye to avoid dilution. Apply pressure on the corner of the eye (close to the nose) for about 1 minute, immediately after instilling the drop.

STORAGE

Store at 2°C to 25°C (36°F to 77°F).

After opening, LUMIGAN  0.01% can be used until the expiration date on the bottle.

Bimatoprost belongs to a class of medications called prostamides. It is available in eye-drop form and is used to reduce the pressure inside the eye for people with open-angle glaucoma or intraocular hypertension (increased pressure in the eye). Fluid is constantly being formed and drained out of the eye. When this fluid does not drain out of the eye properly, pressure inside the eye increases. Bimatoprost works by increasing the flow of fluid out of the eye. It starts to work within 4 hours after being instilled in the eye.
