WHAT IS LEVEMIR?
Levemir (insulin detemir) is a synthetic version of insulin, which is produced naturally in the body. Insulin works by reducing glucose (sugar) levels in the bloodstream. Levemir is a long-acting insulin that begins working several hours after injection and lasts up to 24 hours.
Levemir is a diabetes medication that helps patients with diabetes control their blood sugar levels. This drug is for adults and children over the age of two.
Insulin detemir is used with a proper diet and exercise program to control high blood sugar in people with diabetes. Controlling high blood sugar helps prevent kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, loss of limbs, and sexual function problems.
If you have an allergy to insulin detemir or if you have diabetic ketoacidosis, you should not use Levemir (call your doctor for treatment with a short-acting insulin). Even if the needle has been replaced, never share a Levemir injection pen or syringe with another individual.
