Insulin glargine is used in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise program to help patients with diabetes manage their blood sugar levels. High blood sugar control can help prevent kidney disease, blindness, nerve problems, limb loss, and sexual function issues. Diabetic control can also reduce your chances of having a heart attack or stroke.
Insulin glargine is a synthetic insulin that resembles human insulin. It takes the place of the insulin that your body typically produces. It has a longer acting time than conventional insulin and provides a low, consistent dose of insulin. It works by allowing blood sugar (glucose) to enter cells and be used for energy by your body. Insulin glargine may be used with a shorter-acting insulin product. It may also be used alone or with other diabetes drugs.
Prescription Lantus® is a long-acting insulin used to treat adults with type 2 diabetes and adults and pediatric patients (children 6 years and older) with type 1 diabetes for the control of high blood sugar.
Store all unopened insulin containers in the refrigerator between 36-46 degrees F (2-8 degrees C). Do not freeze, and do not use insulin that has been frozen. If you are using the vials, store open vials in the refrigerator or at room temperature below 86 degrees F (30 degrees C) away from direct heat and light. Store in the carton to protect from light. Do not refrigerate cartridges or pens that are currently in use. Discard all containers in use after 28 days, even if there is insulin left. Also discard all insulin products after the expiration date on the package. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep all medicines away from children and pets.
If you are allergic to insulin glargine or any other type of insulin, or if you have any other allergies, notify your doctor or pharmacist before using it. Inactive chemicals may be included in this product, causing allergic reactions or other issues. For further information, speak with your pharmacist.
Injection site reactions (such as pain, redness, irritation) or weight gain may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
