What is Desferal?
Desferal binds to iron in the bloodstream and eliminates it.
Acute (immediate) iron overdose is treated with Desferal.
Desferal is also used to treat long-term iron excess induced by blood transfusions.
Desferal can be used for a variety of other things that aren’t covered in this pharmaceutical guide.
If you have severe renal disease or are unable to urinate, you should not use Desferal.
Before taking this medicine
You should not use Desferal if you are allergic to it, or if you have: if you have severe renal disease or are unable to urinate
Tell your doctor if you have ever had:
Kidney illness (or dialysis); heart disease; liver disease; vision or hearing problems; asthma or other breathing problems; low calcium levels in the blood (hypocalcemia); or a parathyroid abnormality.
How should I use Desferal?
Read all of the drug guides or instruction papers that came with your prescription and follow all of the instructions on the label. Follow the directions on the prescription to the letter.
Desferal side effects
If you think you’re having an allergic reaction, call 911 right away. hives; difficulty breathing; facial, lip, tongue, or throat swelling
Call your doctor at once if you have:
shortness of breath or rapid breathing; fever; severe, watery, bloody diarrhea with cramping; flushing (sudden warmth, redness, or tingling sensation); stuffy nose, fever, redness or swelling around your nose and eyes, scabbing inside your nose; muscle weakness, bone pain; seizure; o confusion, problems with speech or memory
Common side effects may include:
pain, burning, swelling, redness, rash, itching, blistering, scarring, or a hard lump where the medicine was injected; muscle spasm; numbness, tingling, burning pain; unusual bruising or bleeding; nausea, vomiting, diarrhea; dizziness; or pain, burning, swelling, redness, rash, itching, blistering, scarring, or a hard lump where the medicine was injected.
