CARVEDILOL

Carvedilol oral tablets are used to treat high blood pressure. It can also improve how well your heart works if you’ve had a heart attack or if you have heart failure. Carvedilol is used for treating high blood pressure and congestive heart failure. It is related to labetalol (Normodyne, Trandate). Carvedilol blocks receptors of the adrenergic nervous system, the system of nerves in which adrenalin (epinephrine) is active. Nerves from the adrenergic system enter the heart and release an adrenergic chemical (norepinephrine) that attaches to receptors on the heart’s muscle and stimulates the muscle to beat more rapidly and forcefully.

Carvedilol is used in the treatment of Hypertension (high blood pressure), Angina (heart-related chest pain) and Heart failure.

HOW TO USE

Take this medication by mouth with food as directed by your doctor, usually twice daily. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. To reduce your risk of side effects, your doctor may direct you to start this medication at a low dose and gradually increase your dose. Take this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. For the treatment of high blood pressure, it may take 1 to 2 weeks before you get the full benefit of this drug. Keep taking this medication even if you feel well.

SIDE EFFECTS

Carvedilol oral tablets can cause several types of side effects, including drowsiness. The common side effects that can occur with carvedilol oral tablet include: dizziness, unusual tiredness, low blood pressure, diarrhea, high blood sugar, lack of energy or weakness, slower heart rate, weight gain, changes in sex drive or performance, dry eyes, dry, itchy skin, headache, nausea. If these effects are mild, they may go away within a few days or a couple of weeks. If they’re more severe or don’t go away, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
