Olmesartan and hydrochlorothiazide combination is used alone or together with other medicines to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). High blood pressure adds to the workload of the heart and arteries. If it continues for a long time, the heart and arteries may not function properly. This can damage the blood vessels of the brain, heart, and kidneys, resulting in a stroke, heart failure, or kidney failure. Lowering blood pressure can reduce the risk of strokes and heart attacks. Olmesartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB). It works by blocking a substance in the body that causes blood vessels to tighten. As a result, Olmesartan relaxes the blood vessels. This lowers blood pressure and increases the supply of blood and oxygen to the heart. Hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic (water pill). It reduces the amount of water in the body by increasing the flow of urine, which helps lower the blood pressure. This medicine is available only with your doctor’s prescription.
BEFORE TAKING THIS MEDICATION
You should not use this medicine if you are allergic to hydrochlorothiazide or Olmesartan, or if you are unable to urinate. If you have diabetes, do not use Benicar HCT together with any medication that contains aliskiren (a blood pressure medicine). You may also need to avoid taking Benicar HCT with aliskiren if you have kidney disease. Tell your doctor if you have ever had: kidney disease; liver disease; congestive heart failure; glaucoma; low or high levels of potassium in your blood; asthma or allergies; high cholesterol or triglyceride levels; gout; lupus; diabetes; or an allergy to penicillin or sulfa drugs. Do not use it if you are pregnant. Stop using the medicine and tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant. Olmesartan can cause injury or death to the unborn baby if you take the medicine during your second or third trimester. You should not breastfeed while using this medicine.
HOW TO USE
Take this medication by mouth as directed by your doctor, usually once daily with or without food. If this medication causes you to urinate more frequently, it is best to take it at least 4 hours before your bedtime to prevent having to get up to urinate. If you also take certain drugs to lower your cholesterol (bile acid-binding resins such as cholestyramine, colesevelam or colestipol), take this product at least 4 hours before or at least 4 to 6 hours after these medications. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same time each day. Keep taking this medication even if you feel well. Most people with high blood pressure do not feel sick. Tell your doctor if your condition does not improve or if it worsens (for example, your blood pressure readings increase).
Dizziness or lightheadedness may occur as your body adjusts to the medication. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly. To reduce the risk of dizziness and lightheadedness, get up slowly when rising from a sitting or lying position. Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects. This product may cause dehydration and electrolytes imbalance. Tell your doctor right away if you have any symptoms of dehydration or electrolytes imbalance, including: extreme thirst, very dry mouth, muscle cramps/weakness, fast/slow/irregular heartbeat, confusion. Tell your doctor right away if you have any serious side effects, including: fainting, decrease in vision, eye pain, symptoms of a high potassium blood level (such as muscle weakness, slow/irregular heartbeat), signs of kidney problems (such as change in the amount of urine), severe/persistent diarrhea.

What other drugs will affect Benicar HCT?
If you also take cholestyramine or colestipol, take your Benicar HCT dose 4 hours before or 4 hours after you take the other medicine. Tell your doctor about all your other medicines, especially: steroids; any other blood pressure medications; insulin or oral diabetes medicine; lithium; or NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve), celecoxib, diclofenac, indomethacin, meloxicam, and others. Other drugs may affect Benicar HCT, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.
Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic (water pill). Olmesartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (sometimes called an ARB blocker). Benicar HCT is a combination medicine used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Lowering blood pressure may lower your risk of a stroke or heart attack. This is usually given after other blood pressure medicines did not work or have stopped working. Olmesartan blocks the action of angiotensin II, a chemical in your body that causes your blood vessels to tighten and narrow. This drug helps to relax and widen your blood vessels. This lowers your blood pressure.
