Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is a brand-name, over-the-counter medication that’s classified as an antihistamine. It’s used to help relieve symptoms of hay fever (seasonal allergies), other allergies, and the common cold, as well as itchy skin due to insect bites, hives, and other causes. It is effective for decreasing itchy skin from hives. It’s often considered a first-choice treatment for hives. But although it’s effective for decreasing symptoms of seasonal allergies, Benadryl isn’t often used for this purpose. This is due to side effects such as sleepiness. Benadryl comes in many different forms. Some are oral (taken by mouth), and some are topical (applied to the skin). Examples include: oral tablet, oral liquid-filled capsules (liqui-gels, oral chewable tablets, oral liquid solution, topical cream, topical gel, topical spray, topical stick.
BEFORE YOU USE THE MEDICATION
You should not use Benadryl if you are allergic to diphenhydramine. Ask a doctor or pharmacist if it is safe for you to take this medicine if you have other medical conditions, especially: blockage in your digestive tract (stomach or intestines); bladder obstruction or other urination problems; a colostomy or ileostomy; liver or kidney disease; asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or other breathing disorder; cough with mucus, or cough caused by smoking, emphysema, or chronic bronchitis; heart disease, low blood pressure; glaucoma; a thyroid disorder; or if you take potassium (Cytra, Epiklor, K-Lyte, K-Phos, Kaon, Klor-Con, Polycitra, Urocit-K). It is not known whether Benadryl will harm an unborn baby. Ask a doctor before using this medicine if you are pregnant.
HOW TO USE THE MEDICATION
Take the tablet, capsule, or liquid form by mouth with or without food. Measure liquid forms of this medication using a special measuring device/spoon. Do not use a household spoon because you may not get the correct dose. If you have a single-dose form of this medication (such as a single-use whistle), you do not need to measure the dose. The rapidly-dissolving tablet or strip should be allowed to dissolve on the tongue and then swallowed, with or without water. The chewable tablets should be chewed thoroughly before being swallowed. The dosage is based on your age, medical condition, and response to treatment. There are many brands and forms of diphenhydramine available. Read the dosing instructions carefully for each product because the amount of diphenhydramine may be different between products. Do not increase your dose or take this medication more often than directed. To prevent motion sickness, take your dose 30 minutes before starting activity such as travel. To help you sleep, take your dose about 30 minutes before bedtime. If you continue to have difficulty sleeping for longer than 2 weeks, contact your doctor. Tell your doctor if your condition does not improve or if it worsens.
Diphenhydramine commonly can cause: sedation, tiredness, sleepiness, dizziness, constipation, disturbed coordination, drying and thickening of oral and other respiratory secretions, and urinary retention. Diphenhydramine also may cause low blood pressure, palpitations (abnormal heartbeats), increased heart rate, confusion, nervousness, irritability, blurred vision, double vision, painful urination or difficulty urinating, tremor, sweating, loss of appetite, erectile dysfunction, and nausea. Diphenhydramine should be used with caution (if at all) in persons with narrow-angle glaucoma, prostatic hypertrophy (enlarged prostate gland), hyperthyroidism, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure (hypertension), and asthma.
