USES
LIPITOR (ATORVASTATIN) is used along with a proper diet to help lower “bad” cholesterol and fats (such as LDL, triglycerides) and raise “good” cholesterol (HDL) in the blood. It belongs to a group of drugs known as “statins.” It works by reducing the amount of cholesterol made by the liver. Lowering “bad” cholesterol and triglycerides and raising “good” cholesterol decreases the risk of heart disease and helps prevent strokes and heart attacks.In addition to eating a proper diet (such as a low-cholesterol/low-fat diet), other lifestyle changes that may help this medication work better include exercising, losing weight if overweight, and stopping smoking. WHAT IS LIPITOR (ATORVASTATIN)?
LIPITOR (ATORVASTATIN) is one of a group of inhibitors or ‘statins’ of HMG CoA drugs. Atorvastatin is the generic equivalent for Lipitor.
In people with Type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease or other risks factor, atorvastatin is used to treat high cholesterol and to lower the risk of stroke, heart attack and other cardiac complications.
WARNINGS
If you’re pregnant or breast feeding, or have liver disease, you should not take atorvastatin. Call your doctor immediately when you get pregnant and stop taking this medication.
BEFORE TAKING THIS MEDICINE
You should not use atorvastatin if you are allergic to it, or if you have: liver disease; or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
