Alphagan P (brimonidine) reduces the amount of fluid in the eye, which decreases pressure inside the eye. It is a prescription eye drop used to reduce pressure inside the eyes in people with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. Alphagan P is for use in adults and children as young as 2 years old.
PRIOR TAKING THIS MEDICATION
You should not use Alphagan P if you are allergic to brimonidine. To make sure Alphagan P is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had: heart problems, circulation problems; coronary artery disease (clogged arteries); low blood pressure; depression; or Raynaud’s syndrome, Buerger disease. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
To apply eye drops, wash your hands first. To avoid contamination, do not touch the dropper tip or let it touch your eye or any other surface. If you are wearing contact lenses, remove them before using this medication. After applying this medication, wait at least 15 minutes before putting in your contact lens. Tilt your head back, look upward and pull down the lower eyelid to make a pouch. Hold the dropper directly over your eye and insert one drop, usually three times daily, or as directed by your doctor. Look downward and gently close your eyes for 1 to 2 minutes. Place one finger at the corner of your eye (near the nose) and apply gentle pressure. Try not to blink and do not rub your eye. This will prevent the medication from draining out. Repeat these steps for your other eye if so directed by your doctor. Do not rinse the dropper. Replace the dropper cap after each use. If you are using another kind of eye medication (e.g., drops or ointments), wait at least 5 minutes before applying the other medications. Use eye drops before eye ointments to allow the eye drops to enter the eye. Keep using this medication even if you feel well. Use this medication regularly in order to get the most benefit from it. Remember to use it at the same times each day. Do not stop using this medication without consulting your doctor. Inform your doctor if your condition worsens.
WHAT IS THE INITIAL REACTION AFTER USING ALPHAGAN P?
Alphagan P Ophthalmic Solution may cause blurring of your vision for a short time just after its use. Do not drive until your vision is clear. It may also cause temporary burning or itching sensation in the eye. Inform your doctor if this does not go away.
WHAT OTHER DRUGS WILL AFFECT ALPHAGAN P?
Using Alphagan P with other drugs that make you drowsy can worsen this effect. Ask your doctor before using opioid medication, a sleeping pill, a muscle relaxer, or medicine for anxiety or seizures. Tell your doctor about all your other medicines, especially: an antidepressant; or heart or blood pressure medication.
Alphagan P Ophthalmic Solution is a combination of two medicines: Brimonidine and Stabilized Oxychloro. Brimonidine is a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor. It works by decreasing the production of aqueous humour (fluid in the eye), thereby lowering the increased eye pressure. Stabilized Oxychloro is a preservative. Stop using Alphagan P if your eyes become swollen, painful, or have a discharge. See your doctor as soon as possible. Use Alphagan P exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets.
